5 Small Bedroom Ideas to Make Your Space More Luxurious

Today, I'm going to be sharing a few small bedroom layout tips to make your space look more intentional and luxurious.

I would really love a big spacious bedroom where floor-to-ceiling windows overlook a beautiful forest, or even better a lake, with a fireplace in it for those cold winter nights and a big skylight to observe the stars in the evening. My dream bedroom would also have a beautiful, freestanding bathtub with a charming chandelier hanging over it.

Unfortunately, these are only wishes, as my reality is very different. The good news is that I can still enjoy the little space I do have to work with as long as I put in a bit of work to make it shine. And my 5 small bedroom ideas can help you do the same as well.

Cluttered bedroom

1. Declutter and organize

My goal here is not to shame you, nor is it to stress you out, but what I do want is to help you solve a problem in your small space, and that problem is clutter. Clutter happens because your stuff either doesn't have a proper place of its own or it takes too long for you to put everything away, so it winds up alternating between the bed, floor, desk, or anywhere else you have open space.

To help you with the process of decluttering, I have a couple of questions that I want you to ask yourself, and the answers to those questions will really determine what you should get rid of and what should remain. Which of these items do I love? Which of these items do I need? Which of these items provide practical value to me and my family?

Unpacking a suitcase in a bedroom

If you can really follow through with this exercise, then well done. But if that's not possible, don't worry. You can also think of some clever storage solutions. These can be things like hidden storage drawers for under your bed or baskets under a bench.

2. Select a color scheme

Color is everything in interior design and even more so in a small space, which is why it’s number 2 on my list of small bedroom decorating ideas. I see many people making the following mistakes, so don’t be one of them.

Colorful bedroom design

A. Too many colors

This is a very fatal mistake because it is very easy for the eye to recognize boundaries, and boundaries are created whenever you use too many colors in a small space. Instead, you want everything to look as cohesive as possible.

Black and white contrast in bedroom design

B. Contrasting colors

You don't want to use contrasting colors either. While contrast is beautiful and can be used to your advantage in some cases, too much contrast, on the other hand, is not great. The reason for this is that the brain will recognize the boundaries created by contrasting colors first, and then it will cut your space into smaller pieces.

Using dark colors in a bedroom

C. Dark colors

While dark colors can have a beautiful effect, they can easily overwhelm a small space and make it feel claustrophobic. So in order for dark colors to work in a small room, you need to have a lot of natural lighting to counteract the receding feeling that dark colors create.

Adding hanging lamps in a bedroom

3. Add hanging lamps

In a tiny space, having a statement lamp might not be possible. To resolve this problem, I highly recommend hanging your lamp from the ceiling or using a wall sconce with a movable arm. Lamps that hang from the ceiling draw the eye upwards, emphasizing the vertical and drawing attention away from the small footprint.

Symmetrical balance in a bedroom

4. Incorporate symmetrical or asymmetrical balance

Symmetrical balance is the principle that elements around a given axis should mirror each other exactly. This means that if you could theoretically fold a room in half along a given axis, then both halves would be exactly identical to each other.

Symmetrical balance in interior design

Symmetrical balance is usually done around a focal point like a bed. While it results in a uniform composition with a very striking aesthetic, it is not always practical in a small room. In a tiny space, you barely have space for a bed, let alone the two bedside tables you would need in order to achieve a symmetrical balance. So, in this case, this is where asymmetrical balance enters.

Asymmetrical balance in beroom design

Where symmetrical balance aims to mirror two sides of an axis, asymmetrical balance is when the visual weights of the objects, colors, or textures in the room are balanced without having them be an exact duplicate of one another.

Creating asymmetrical balance

To create an asymmetrical balance, we should use different elements with similar weights on the opposite axis. A concrete example of how to do this is to use a small wall-mounted bedside table on one side and, on the other side, you can put a chair.

Creating a focal point with wall art

5. Create a focal point

A focal point is a unique feature or a specific area that draws your eye to it. Generally speaking, the bed and whatever is above it can be the focal point in a bedroom.

In a small room, you can use this to your own advantage to take the eye's focus away from the size of the room and place it onto something else that is strategically placed above the bed. An example of this can be a huge painting or a photo.

Small bedroom layout

Instead of placing something tiny, you want to go big in order to trick your eye into believing that the space is actually big enough to hold the painting; therefore, the space should be big.

Making the most of your small bedroom layout is no easy feat, but with the 5 small bedroom ideas I’ve shared today, the process becomes a lot easier. The trick is to think intentionally about the space you do have to work with and incorporate the small bedroom decor ideas that inspire you most.
