4 Ways of Using Wood Cutting Boards in Decor

One of my favorite tools in the kitchen is a wood cutting board. Not only does it protect your countertop when you’re prepping and cooking in the kitchen, but it also looks beautiful propped up as it awaits its next use. Wood cutting boards add a warm and rustic feel to any kitchen.

Sure cutting boards are useful and functional, but have you ever considered using a wood cutting board as decor in your home? Honestly, I never considered it until I found myself with quite a collection of boards and not enough space to store them.

You see, there are a few items that I see at shops or vintage markets that I have a very hard time NOT bringing back home to the farmhouse. These items include (but are not limited to): wood cutting boards, crocks, wood stools, and baskets. Some would say I have a problem, I say “One man’s trash is this woman’s treasure.”

I love all my cutting boards so much. Not to the point that I’ve named them or anything crazy like that. But I do love them enough that it felt like a shame to have them hidden away in a cabinet. Full disclosure, my cabinet space is pretty much at capacity so that’s not really an option anyway.

I found myself faced with a dilemma. How do I store my wood cutting board collection (we’ll call it) when it’s not in use? I came up with a few ideas, four to be exact, which I plan to share with you today. Suddenly, my useful and functional cutting boards became beautiful additions to my decor throughout the farmhouse and now I can appreciate them all every day.

When it comes to hanging wood cutting boards on the wall, different shapes and sizes make for a more interesting display. I found this affordable rod and hook system that’s perfect for hanging wood cutting boards on the wall in our breakfast nook.

Not only does it make a beautiful display, but these are some of my favorite boards to use because of their size and shape. They are displayed right off the kitchen, so they are easily accessible when I want to use them. Hanging these cutting boards on the wall is by far and away one of the most popular ways I have shared on Instagram and it’s one of my favorites in the farmhouse too, that’s why it’s number one.

Another great way to display (store) your wood cutting boards is on the kitchen counter or a shelf. You can use one or a few cutting boards clustered together against the wall. They make a great backdrop for displaying other pieces such as bowls of fruit, books, candles, and small plants.

I love to use my biggest cutting board as a riser or a tray in the middle of my kitchen island. The wood is the perfect contrast against the granite and adds warmth to the space. I usually put a vase with flowers, a candle, and a bowl of fruit on it.

After falling in love with the warmth a wood cutting board added to the kitchen when I used it as a riser or tray, I tried my hand at making a wood riser and wood farmhouse tray of my own. They were surprisingly easy to make and they turned out beautifully!

That’s right, I said it, “Make.” I have an incredibly inexpensive and easy wood cutting board DIY for you. With a thrifted, wood cutting board, a knob I had leftover from a previous project, and a hanging jar I had laying around the farmhouse, I made an easy wood cutting board sconce. You can make your own hanging jar with an inexpensive piece that I’ve linked here. Fill the jar with flowers for the season or put a candle in it. It makes a beautiful wall decor piece for a kitchen or breakfast nook.
