3 Quick & Simple Steps to Finding Your Interior Design Style

Ready to find your interior design style? With so many options to choose from, it probably seems like an overwhelming task at times. From looking at inspirational photos online to scouring furniture stores and even asking a friend, “What is your interior design style?” determining what it is that you like most can be quite the undertaking.

Fortunately, I know just what advice to give when it comes to discovering how to find your interior design style. So I’m sharing my professional advice with you today.

Decluttering before designing your home

1. Purge and study

The first step is to purge your space, ask yourself which items matter most, and keep only those that you love. This step is absolutely crucial, and this is one of the very first things I ask my clients to do before we begin the design process.

We live in a time where we collect things, and it's very hard to let go. But in order to discover your style, you need to let go of the things you don't love in order to find the things that bring you joy.

So firstly, eliminate the clutter and clean your home. This will give you a blank slate, and help you begin the process of finding your style. Then, take a look at everything remaining in your space. Do you love that end table? I mean, do you really love that end table?

Selling items from your home

If the answer is no, then sell it. Plus, you will have some funds in your pocket to replace the item you sold. Don't keep something that you have fallen out of love with just because it cost a pretty penny ten years ago. Let it go.

The next part is to study what remains. Why do you love it? Is it the wood tone? Is it the scalloped edges? Is it the color? Look for the pattern. This will help you stay on the right track when selecting things for your home.

Using Pinterest boards for design ideas

2. Use Pinterest boards

Next, make a Pinterest board. Pin only the things that you 100% love. My daughter taught me this trick, and it was incredibly helpful. Don't pin something just because you like the chair in the picture or maybe one item in the picture. You need to pin an image that shows everything that you love. Only pin the images that you would like to copy and paste into your own home.

After some time, you'll be able to review the images that you have put on your board, and you will be able to see a visible pattern to your taste.

Perhaps you'll find that you saved a lot of photos of patterned chairs, linen drapes, or antique side tables. Maybe you pinned a lot of images with moody colors and brass accents. When you see image after image of things you found homey, it is going to be obvious what your design style is.

You will be able to have a vision of what kind of things you gravitate towards, and this will help you when choosing things for your home. It will set a wonderful guideline.

This tip is one of my favorites because it's free. You can reassess what you like or don't like and if you don't like it, just delete it. And remember, just like step one, purge the images that you don't absolutely love. If you don't keep your pins narrowed down, it will muddy the water, and it will be less apparent what your design style really is.

3. Be selective with new items

Number three, only bring things into your home that you absolutely love. Again, this is a tip my daughter taught me and it has changed the way I decorate my home.

Sarah doesn't bring a single thing into her home unless she finds it beautiful, or she appreciates it in a certain way. You can pick up any item in Sarah's home, and she can tell you why she chose it down to the pots that she has her plants in. Even those were chosen to create cohesiveness in her home. Because she chooses only items she loves, she loves her home, and it's exactly her style.

Now don't choose an item just because it solves a decorative problem. Does it spark interest in your heart? Great! Bring it in and incorporate it into your decor. Is there something about it that you're not head over heels over, and it just doesn't incorporate the theme that you have on your Pinterest board? Consider passing up on it until you find something you love.

This will ensure that your entire home is filled with things that bring you joy. This is also a great way to give yourself peace in your home and a connection to the space in which you live.

When you surround yourself with things you love, you've created a safe space to exist and feel calm. This is what so many of my clients wish for, a place to feel truly at home, and it is my job to create that for them.
