How to Design Home Lighting in Each Room of Your House
Today's topic is how to design lighting for a house; not just lighting for the sake of lighting. It's about incorporating lighting as an accent piece and part of the decor. It's really part of the overall design of the home.
Home lighting has come a long way in the fact that it's both functional as well as decorative.
Home lighting ideas
Dining room lighting
Let's take a look at the lighting in this formal dining room. Originally, there was a light that was very dark and dim and super outdated, which came from the builder. However, it was difficult to place a dining table where the light was.
So, this fixture is not just an accent piece. I chose this linear light because of a special reason being that the junction box was right here. I needed to find a linear light, so I can have a dining table spread out in this space.
Kelvin of lights
Kelvin relates to the temperature of the light. A lower temperature rating, or a lower Kelvin, of about 2700, is extremely common for household light shades; it's a very soft or yellowish light. I believe the term or the style of light is called warm to soft light within the hardware store.
As we increase the Kelvin, we get toward a bright white and then into daylight. Daylight is the brightest all the way up at 5000-6500 Kelvin.
We don't necessarily want to do that because bright white or daylight also starts picking up a blue hue to it. Somewhere around 3500 to 4000 Kelvin rating gives us a really nice, well-balanced white light.
Guest bedroom lighting
This modern Capiz light is fun. Plus, with it being white as well, it blends in, but at the same time, you can tell it's definitely an accent light.
Loft lighting
Originally they had a twin mattress here. It was just an area for the children to play, and we made the area feel more spacious. I definitely get that feeling, especially because we have high vaulted ceilings here, as well as the stairways open to the upstairs level, and lots of windows.
Master bedroom lighting
This is a clean and modern light fixture over the bed. Before, there was a ceiling fan.
Another great feature of this house, too, is the bedroom is so large that we wanted to show off that there is ultra room for a home office.
Master bathroom lighting
This single light doesn't have to go across the wall like what we would normally see. This one points down very neat and obviously for a half bath, very compact.
House lighting design
