How to Elevate Your Home: 3 Tips to Upgrade Builder-Grade

Looking to elevate home style and decor at your residence? Today, I am going to share three things you can implement in your home that will take it to the next level and break up the cookie-cutter interior design builders are so fond of.

We are all about being more authentic and not having a home that's just like our next-door neighbors, so if that's of interest to you, then I want you to know that you're in the right place.

Looking to update your builder-grade home in the most affordable way possible? Here are three simple tips to elevate home decor without spending a bunch of money:

Ways to elevate your home

1. Lighting

The number one tip on my list is to revamp your lighting. Light fixtures go a long way when it comes to making an impact on the overall feel your home gives. When you're looking to add a couple of things to make it feel more current without breaking the bank, then I highly recommend that you take a look at your light fixtures first.

Oftentimes with a spec home, they have what's called the included package or the builder-grade package, and those include the bottom-of-the-barrel light fixtures that don't cost much at all.

Of course, they don't cost much because they have no uniqueness to them, and they don't really provide any character whatsoever. So changing out your builder-grade light fixtures is really going to make a difference, and it's going to go the distance when it comes to your budget and what you are investing in the home.

When you're sourcing light fixtures, here are some tips that you can take into consideration:

A. They don’t have to match

Everything that you do in your home does not have to match perfectly. In fact, it's actually going to make more of an impact if you don't have that uniform feel and if you have all of these eclectic pieces that really showcase a curated and beautifully designed space. So I want you to keep that in mind when you're sourcing your light fixtures.

B. They don’t need the same finish

You can do gold in your bathroom, stainless in your kitchen, and black in your dining room. Especially when separated by different spaces, the finish on your lighting doesn’t have to be the same from room to room.

2. Mirrors

The second tip on my list for how to make a builder-grade home look custom is to change out the mirrors.

Changing the mirrors from builder grade

Now if you have a mirror in your home that goes from one end of the vanity to the other and it takes up that whole wall, I want you to rip it out. I want you to just get rid of it.

Organic and abstract mirrors

By eliminating your big piece of mirror, you can now do some organic, abstract types of mirrors, maybe even some round ones or a smaller, rectangle one.

Then, how you fill the space behind those more appropriately scaled mirrors with your vanity and your sink is you bring in some texturing. That can be a tile backsplash or maybe even a peel-and-stick backsplash depending on your budget. It could even be some wallpaper or one of my favorites, some millwork.

Lastly, it could be a shiplap that would look really pretty. No matter which you choose, it will give it some interest and texture and go the distance for you.

3. Cabinetry hardware

The third tip I have for how to elevate your home decor is to upgrade your cabinetry hardware. This is another small one that I feel like, oftentimes, people overlook because it is such a small one but in design, I'm a firm believer in all of the little details because they are what really go the distance for your overall aesthetic.

So if you're not familiar with different types of cabinetry hardware, I wanted to show you guys two different options.

Cabinetry hardware

You have what's called your pulls and your knobs. These can go vertical or you can also see them go horizontal.

How to measure pulls

Now with your pulls, you're going to want to measure from hole to hole so that you don't get too big or too small of a pull because they do come in a variety of lengths.

But one thing that I want to call out when talking about hardware is that it's really fun to mix and match. So you can do a combination of pulls and knobs or maybe latches and pulls.

How to elevate your home

Really the options are endless, and I would say the more variety you can bring in, the more of those tiny details you've paid attention to, which will translate into your overall design.

You can also do different finishes. I don't mean to do your kitchen in, let's say, black knobs and gold pulls. I think that that is very trendy, and it's not very timeless. But what I am saying is you could do maybe gold or brass in your kitchen. Then maybe you do stainless steel in your primary bathroom and some leather pulls in the guest bathroom.

You don't have to make them all the same finish, and you also don't have to make them all the same style. So you could go with one style in your kitchen and then you could do something that's maybe a little bit more modern or just a different type of flair in other areas.

How to elevate your home

Choosing to elevate home decor can make a much bigger impact on your investment than you might imagine, which is why learning how to make a builder-grade home look custom should be at the top of your to-do list this coming year.
