How to Create a Peaceful, Welcoming & Cozy Home: 7 Top Tips

I will share some easy and budget-friendly ways to create relaxing and cozy home interiors. From warm color schemes to comfortable furniture and decor, I will show you how to transform your space into a peaceful, welcoming oasis.

Get ready to snuggle up and unwind with new and cozy home ideas.

Maybe you have an open concept and feel like you can’t create a cozy atmosphere. Or you feel you don’t have the budget to create a cozy home.

But this world is full of demands and stresses so you deserve to come home to a house that makes you feel comforted and safe and where you can recharge. Whether you have a grand house or a tiny apartment, you can have a cozy house.

Cluttered living room

1. Declutter and simplify

We all know this is true–clutter causes stress. Having a messy home is the opposite of cozy. Remove unnecessary items, keep the essentials, and create a clean slate to work with. If you always have clutter in a certain area, it’s probably because of a habit.

Storage baskets
Maybe you need to put a basket there to house items. Or, get a piece of furniture with a drawer. Maybe, start a new habit and just take five minutes before bed to put things away. This is the first and most important step to creating a peaceful, cozy environment.

2. Lighting

Lighting can take your home from cold to cozy with these tips. Add lamps to balance the lighting in a room. Overhead lighting is way too harsh and exposing. Lamps diffuse light. Overhead lighting should be dimmable to keep the room well-lit but not overexposed. Nothing is quite as cozy as just using lamps around a room.

How many lamps should you have in a living room? I suggest no less than three lamps and no more than five lamps, depending on the size of your living room. Usually, you can fit two side table lamps and a floor lamp.

Warm vs cool lighting
Choose the correct light bulbs. Nothing feels more jarring and sterile than bright, cool-toned lights. The warmth in a light bulb is measured in a unit called Kelvins. The lower the Kelvin (K), the warmer the light. The higher the Kelvin, the cooler and whiter the light. I recommend a warm bulb in the 2,700 range.

Soft neutral color palette in a bedroom

3. Color palettes

A space with too many competing patterns, textures, and colors that don’t coordinate causes visual clutter and subconscious stress. But an extremely minimalistic space without color or texture feels empty, cold, and without personality, which also keeps you on edge. The way to avoid both of these situations is to choose a color palette.

Select three to five colors (like the sample above) so you avoid having too much or a lack of color or stimulation in a room. Choose one neutral color to use as a base, one bold color, and one to three other coordinating colors.

Use varying hues within that range of colors. Just don’t stray away from the original colors you selected. This creates a cohesive space that inspires coziness.

Putting music on a record player

4. Music

Music invites emotion. Background music is part of a cozy home. Choose music in a genre you love but keep in mind your goal. Relaxing music is peaceful and joyful. When I finish designing a home and want to welcome a client for the big reveal, I put in soft music for them.

5. Invest in comfortable, durable furniture

Prioritize comfort over trends. Consider pieces that invite you to sink in and stay awhile. Your living room should be relaxing and for unwinding.

Choose durable but soft materials for upholstery, such as performance fabrics that are soft with superior durability and stain resistance.

For example, I sell performance fabric that feels like velvet! These fabrics put you at ease because you’re not worried about ruining furniture.

Furniture to scale
Consider scale when you buy furniture. Oversized furniture can create a cozy but smaller furniture is more intimate. Arrange furniture to encourage conversation and easy interactions. Arrange furniture around a fireplace or coffee table, for example.

6. Scents

The sense of smell plays an important role in the psychological effects of mood and stress. Scents can reduce stress and anxiety and create a cozy atmosphere.

Choose a scent you love that invokes warmth. If you have a diffuser, look up essential oil blends that create the mood you want. Choose clean-burning, non-toxic candles, such as ones made of soy or beeswax.

Patterned drapes

7. Textiles

Let’s talk about window treatments. The majority of textiles, like rugs, upholstery, and bedding, are located in the bottom half of the room. That leaves the top half of the walls and the room visually cold and uncovered. Bring pattern, texture, and color up the walls with fabric to warm up the space and eliminate echoing.

Curtain dimensions
Remember to hang the drapes higher to give the illusion of height in the room. Hang them a couple of inches wider than the window to give the illusion that the windows seem larger than they are.

Living room layout
Rugs bring pattern and color into a space, soften the room, and help eliminate echoes. When selecting a rug for a living room, choose a size large enough for at least the front legs of the seating to sit on, which balances out the space perfectly.

Pillows make seating go from bland to inviting. Go with down or down alternatives. Stiff or flat pillows imply neglect.

Throw blanket

Use throw blankets as another level of coziness so you can feel warm and feel a sense of comfort and ease.
