Wabi-sabi is actually a lifestyle, not a trend, as most of us are becoming more aware of it.

Many of us can benefit from adopting a wabi-sabi transformation, as the meaning of it means to see beauty in imperfections.

So if you've been scrolling through Pinterest and Instagram, and have been fantasizing about a similar look, I will share some tips with you today on how to start turning your space into a wabi-sabi home.

Decluttering your space

1. Declutter your space

To create a wabi-sabi style home, you want to focus on the less is more principle. Decluttering creates a sense of peace both for your home and mind. You don't need a lot of things to make something look beautiful. What you have right in your home can be looked at with fresh eyes starting today.

2. Incorporate neutral earth tones

One of the main elements you will see in wabi-sabi home design is a soft color palette. This evokes a sense of calmness and serenity. You can incorporate soft tones with wall color or textiles.

Styling with vintage pieces

3. Style with vintage pieces

With wabi-sabi on the rise, you can find many retailers replicating the wabi-sabi look. However, I personally think it's way more fun to thrift or go to flea markets and antiques, seeking interesting weathered pieces to incorporate in my home.

Some things to look out for when you are thrifting for a wabi-sabi look are baskets. They come in so handy for coffee tables and bookshelves.

You also want to look out for textiles. Take a look at all of the beautiful knits, silks, and linens.

When sourcing vintage home decor, consider organic textures such as wood, stone, and concrete to decorate. The more weathered the item, the more character it lends to the wabi-sabi tradition.

Watering real flowers and plants

4. Bring nature inside

Bring the outside in by using lots of branches, plants, and flowers. Organic materials and elements from nature are a major component of wabi-sabi home decor.

Mismatched decor in a wabi-sabi style

5. Mismatched decor

Not everything in wabi-sabi needs to be cohesive. It's okay to pair unlikely items together because the meaning of wabi-sabi is to find beauty in the imperfect.

So go ahead and surround your space with the things that you love. You can still keep your aesthetic while balancing a wabi-sabi shift. The point is to create a space that is calm and free so that you can enjoy the burden of trying to achieve the perfect room.

6. Only keep things you love

With wabi-sabi, you want to keep a minimum of the items currently in your possession.

Wabi-sabi encourages minimalism. Bring yourself to keep things that hold significant meaning rather than attain a lot of things into your space. You want to include things in your space that make you feel calm and not overwhelmed. It helps to maximize the joy of the objects that are around you.

Don't you miss color? I didn't even see accents of color, other than the green plants. I couldn't live this way; far too cold. I love color and that doesn't mean that my house looks like a rainbow or circus. 🤔
