Everything You Need to Know About Dark Academia in Decor
Let's talk about dark academia. The dark academia decor trend emerged in 2020 and it’s a quirky aesthetic rooted in images of old libraries and ivy-covered buildings; dark-toned walls and a myriad of treasures on display. Think Hogwarts, but with a lot more style.
Despite its slightly spooky ambiance, a dark academia room is a balance of dark and light colors, natural wood, vintage and metal finishes, and lots of interesting and well-arranged objects, as well as plenty of natural lighting.
It's dark, but not like Hot Topic dark. Everything feels very grown up but there can be a sense of playfulness and curiosity which can be added by the antiques that you decide to fill your home with.
Dark academia, like most things these days, got its start on social media, primarily on TikTok.
Let’s take a look at the characteristics of dark academia style decor.

How to incorporate dark academia into your decor
Dark paint
Venture to the dark side by using dark paint. Use painted wallpaper on the ceiling to emphasize the library or club vibe.
Portraits
Use antique portraits in dark colors to emphasize a moody scheme. Think of 19th-century portraits of gentlemen. Look for these items at auctions and local thrift shops. Grouping several of these portraits on the wall gives a library or club feel.
Antiques
Source authentic antiques, such as ornate photo frames, elaborate candle holders, or a flower vase. An antique can add so much character even to the most contemporary room. Give an antique a new life or reupholster a new chair with fresh linen fabric or bold velvet.
Earthy hues
Use earthy, muted, or dusty hues such as greens and blues. This will create a calm space, as well.
Natural furnishings
Create an enduring statement piece with natural furnishings. Look for materials with texture and movement, such as leather, to bring warmth and character to a piece of furniture.
Dark academia
While some people may criticize dark academia as being exclusive or elitist, it is ultimately a personal and creative choice for those who choose to embrace it.
As with any aesthetic, dark academia can be interpreted and expressed in a variety of ways, depending on the individual's personal preferences and interests.
