I'm going to talk about five easy tips on how to elevate home decor, probably with the things you already have at home. If you need some of these things, they are very inexpensive.

There are so many ways you can bring elegance and timelessness into your home, and it does not have to be expensive.

Using paint to elevate home interiors

1. Use paint to transform a space

I think one of the most dramatic impacts that can change a room is paint. When you're choosing paint, it's all preference.

You may love color and want to do an accent wall or paint all your walls a particular color. If you want to keep things classic and timeless, use that wall color as your main accent and make everything else in the space more neutral.

Neutral tones tend to be timeless. They will never go out of style and tend to blend with almost any decor style you have.

How shelving can elevate your home decor

2. Think about shelving

Most people wouldn't think that shelving can add so much elegance, but it can elevate an entire space. Many home stylists and interior designers incorporate shelving to display artwork and sculptures.

I went to Home Depot, bought some shelves, painted them white, and added black bracing brackets to hold the shelf. Then, I added all of my pottery, all of my vessels, and some books. I believe that that shelving system just really brought the room together. It was exactly what I was looking for.

The pottery, vessels, and things that I styled the shelving with just elevated it. It looks elegant. It looks timeless. Right behind the shelving is some lime washing. I only paid about $20 or $30 per board and maybe about $14 for those brackets. So, if you have a small budget, invest in some shelving.

You can do it in your bedroom or in your main living room, and it doesn't have to be large. If you love collecting pottery vessels and sculptures, shelving is a perfect way to display all that unique artwork.

How to select the right lighting for a space

3. Consider lighting

Lighting is essential for the obvious reasons. We need light, but lighting can make or break a space. It took me a little bit to understand that. It wasn't until a few years ago I started looking at lighting as more of a statement piece in the room. I was using regular cheap lamps that I could get from Home Goods or even at the thrift store.

Now, I'm starting to look at lighting in a whole different way. You have to consider your style, and you have to consider how you want the room to look and marry those two together.

Think about what lighting would accent this space that won't take away from the room but would tie it all together. You can change the shade and easily take a boring, basic lamp; by changing the shade, you can completely transform the whole lamp.

Consider your style, get inspiration from Pinterest or other online sites, and start thinking about the ones you're gravitating to. Then, look at your space and ask yourself, would this lamp blend into this space? Lighting is essential. It's one of those decor pieces that a lot of people don't put much effort into.

So consider lighting; consider bringing a fabulous floor lamp into your space. Consider maybe a nice chandelier or a pendant, even some accent lamps, accent lamps you can put on your table, or you can put on your buffet. There are so many possibilities with lighting.

DIY textured artwork

4. Artwork

I do a lot of DIY; for the most part, a lot of the artwork here is all DIY. I took a huge, enormous canvas that I already owned. It was just sitting in the garage.

I decided to take this canvas and make a minimal textured artwork piece with it. So this piece is just very special. It just frames the space so perfectly. Then I've done some smaller pieces.

DIY textured art panels

I also took some art panels and decided to texturize them using various art papers and vinyl.

You can easily frame them and put them on your wall. There are tons of videos out there that can show you how to do your artwork. You can do your painting if you know how to paint, use color, and add texture.

There are so many things according to your taste that you can create with your hands, which will cost you nothing. You can go to the thrift store and buy an old canvas, prime it, paint it, and go to work and start making your artwork.

If you're not an artist, that's okay too. One of my number one places to go for artwork would be HomeGoods. They probably have the best selection with the best price point.

Changing or altering window treatments

5. Window treatments

Changing or altering your window treatments will dramatically impact the space. If you were to remove your curtains and add a new pair of curtains, it would instantly transform the room.

So, when it comes to window treatments, the way to keep it elegant and timeless is to keep the colors neutral. I love white and beige because they let a lot more light in. The lighter the texture of the fabric, the more light you're emitting into the space and creating nice lighting in your room.

Window treatments

So, I keep my panels very neutral in tone.

A lot of them are white. Some of them are beige. Some of them are sheer. I use a lot of linen. I love Belgian linen. I love the wrinkly look.

Timeless and elegant home decor

This is all about keeping that timeless, elegant look.

It's just using neutral tones to elevate a space and the kind of curtains you buy. I do not spend much money on my window treatments because I change them often.

I have a winter set, and then I have a spring and summer set. I go a lot lighter, like with my sheers in the spring and summer. Then I go a little bit thicker in texture, and I use linens and sometimes velvet more during the holidays.
