Small Dining Room? Here's How to Maximize Space & Style

The holidays are just around the corner and if you're hosting, like I am, then you need to figure out how exactly everyone is going to fit around the table.

So I was thankful to come across this video by architect and interior designer Zahira Cury of D.Signers that proves with the right approach, a compact dining area can be as stylish and functional as any larger space.

Here are some of Zahira's creative ideas to help you (and me!) make the most of every inch in your small dining room:

1. Choose the Right Dining Table

The dining table is the centerpiece of any dining room, and selecting the right one is crucial for small spaces. Consider the following options:

  • Round Tables: Round tables are ideal for small rooms. Their lack of corners allows for more guests, creating an organic, fluid atmosphere. Opt for a round table with a central base, which maximizes comfort and leaves more room for movement. The absence of table legs near the chairs also visually lightens the space.
  • Oval Tables: If your space is narrow and rectangular, oval tables are a great option. They offer the functionality of a rectangular table but with the softness of a round one. Choose a table with a central support structure for added comfort and a lighter visual impact.
  • Folding Tables: In extremely tight spaces, folding tables can be a lifesaver. These tables can be attached to the wall and folded away when not in use, making them ideal for rooms where space is at a premium.

2. Combine and Optimize Your Chairs

When selecting chairs for a small dining room, mixing different styles and making them multifunctional can be a fun and practical choice.

  • Variety in Design: Not all chairs need to match. Mixing chairs of different shapes and colors can create a unique and dynamic space. This allows chairs to be used in other areas of the home when not needed at the table.
  • Light and Easy to Move: Choose chairs that are light in appearance and easy to rearrange. Chairs with transparent or open backs create a sense of space, while high-backed or bulky chairs can make the room feel crowded.
  • Built-In Seating: In extremely tight spaces, consider using low stools or benches that can be stored under the table when not in use.

3. Use Hanging or Wall Lamps

A statement lamp can enhance the style of a small dining room without overwhelming the space. Here are some tips for lighting:

  • Pendant Lamps: If the ceiling height allows, choose a striking yet simple chandelier or pendant lamp. This will draw the eye upward, making the room feel taller and more open.
  • Wall Lamps: If ceiling height or space is an issue, wall lamps are a great alternative. They can be extended when needed and add an element of asymmetry and charm to the room, especially in dining areas with limited electrical outlets.

4. Consider Built-In Seats

Built-in seating can make a small dining room feel warm and cozy. A bench with built-in storage adds functionality while maximizing the use of space. Combining a bench with chairs in different materials creates a stylish, relaxed vibe.

5. Add a Tall Plant

Bringing nature into your small dining room can liven up the space. A tall, narrow plant in the corner draws the eye upward, making the room feel taller. Be sure to choose a plant that doesn't interfere with movement or circulation.

6. Maximize Space with Blinds

In small dining rooms, heavy curtain panels can overwhelm the space. Blinds are a more practical option. They allow natural light to fill the room, are easy to clean, and come in a variety of materials and styles to match your decor.

7. Create a Focal Point

Having a focal point in a small dining room adds interest and depth. You can achieve this through:

  • Wallpaper: Choose wallpaper with soft colors and organic patterns. Avoid geometric designs that can make the space feel smaller. Instead, opt for vertical lines or three-dimensional effects that create the illusion of depth.
  • Artwork: A single, well-proportioned painting behind the dining table can create a striking focal point without overwhelming the space. Avoid crowded gallery walls in small rooms.
  • Bold Lighting: A unique lamp or chandelier can also serve as a focal point, provided it fits the room’s scale and doesn’t clutter the space.

8. Versatility is Key

In small spaces, multifunctional furniture is essential. Your dining room can serve as more than just a place to eat. Consider tables that double as workspaces or study areas when needed.

9. Use Light Colors and Natural Light

Light colors make a room feel larger. Stick to whites, light grays, or neutral shades for walls and furniture. A light color palette opens up the space and creates a calm, airy atmosphere.

10. Go for Low Furniture

Low furniture allows the space to feel more open and helps draw attention to other elements in the room, such as lighting or artwork. Choose chairs and tables with minimal height, avoiding high-backed furniture that could block the flow of the room.

11. Lighten the Room with Acrylic and Glass

Acrylic or glass furniture is an excellent choice for small dining rooms. Transparent materials reduce visual clutter and make the space feel larger. Acrylic chairs, for example, blend seamlessly with various styles while keeping the room light and airy.

Small dining rooms can be both functional and stylish with the right approach. Whether you’re selecting the perfect table, experimenting with different chairs, or adding a tall plant, these design tips will help you create a space that feels open, comfortable, and beautiful.
