Thrifted Brass Candleholder Makeover & Styling
Have you ever strolled through a flea market, spotted an item, hesitated, and then decided to pick it up, only to discover it's surprisingly heavy and might be made of brass?
I recently had that experience and brought home a hidden gem. Let me share my process for turning this neglected piece into a beautiful brass candleholder for my studio.
I often walked past this particular item during my junking adventures, not paying it much attention. However, I decided to look closer when I noticed a discount on it during my recent visit. To my surprise, the piece was made of brass and had a substantial weight. The best part? It was incredibly affordable compared to similar items at high-end stores.
Cleaning it up
I brought the brass candleholder home, ready to give it a new lease on life. The cleaning process was simple and cost-effective. I used a mixture of water, white vinegar, and Bar Keepers Friend. Applying this mixture with a sponge and gently scrubbing in circular motions revealed the hidden beauty underneath the tarnish.
I reapplied the mixture and let it sit on the candleholder for about 10 minutes to allow it to work before scrubbing and then rinsing it off.
Preserving the patina
To maintain a bit of the original character, I left a touch of the patina on the brass. It added a vintage charm that complemented the overall aesthetic. However, there was one small spot on the bottom where I used a bit of Rub-N-Buff to clean up an imperfection. This technique proved helpful for giving the piece a polished finish.
With the brass candleholder now clean and refreshed, it was time to craft a unique way to display my larger candles. Since I didn't have the right-sized candle, I repurposed a small bowl from another candle. Using a bit of hot glue, I attached the bowl to the candleholder, creating a platform for a larger candle.
This beautiful brass candleholder found its perfect home in my studio.
I wanted a large candle for the space, and this piece was the ideal solution. The vintage feel it added next to my big, beautiful pink velvet chair enhanced the overall ambiance.
